Hawaii Polo Life vs Valiente

August 13, 2017 | James Dodge

Hawaii Polo Life is the only all pro team in the tournament, and is bouncing back in a big way after a disappointing Columbine Cup. Led by 5 goal duo Juan Martin Obregon and Tommy Collingwood, they took tournament favorites Valiente to overtime. This must have been a huge confidence boost for them. After a rough start in the game being down by at least 4 goals we saw their chemistry come to life. Tommy Collingwood led in both goals and backhands, scoring 2 goals and hitting 14 backhands. He finished the game with 22 points and is currently in second place beating Cambiaso in fantasy points. Juan Martin Obregon played well too while he didn’t have any goals from the field he went 3 for 4 from the penalty line and was second on the team with 11 backhands. He finished the game with 20 points and is currently 3rdin fantasy points.  Also in the lineup is 4 goaler Mariano Gracida, he hopes to pull the team forward, but has yet to show us what he is capable of. He did have the most shots on goal and scored once from the field. Hopefully moving forward he can be more of the offensive weapon he was brought in to be, he finished the game with 7 points. Finally 6 goaler Nacho Badiola I didn’t think he would do much in this tournament but he played surprisingly well. He finished in the top 5 for fantasy points and was 3rd on the team in backhands with 10 and scored a goal from the field. He finished the first round of games with 14 points.

Valiente are the favorites coming into this tournament led by the number 1 player in the world Adolfo Cambiaso. Cambiaso seems to be head and shoulders above everyone else on the field and after the first round of games is in 1st place. It has been a while since he has lived up to his high price tag but with no other 9 or 10 goalers in this tournament, he is looking like a must in all lineups. He led his team in both goals from the field with 3 and backhands with 7. He finished the game with 26 points. His son also entered the lineup in place of Bob Jornayvaz. He was amazing and clearly trusted by his teammates to move the ball and while he didn’t score much higher than a normal patron with 4 points if you watch the game he played better than most patrons. Also in the lineup is Agustin Nero whose play was less than impressive for fantasy as he took the role of clearing space for Cambiaso as the two young players tried to pull the team forward. He finished with only 1 fantasy point. Kian Hall was solid, scoring a goal from the field and having two shots on goal, although we would like to see him convert on a few more goals he was doing his job well. He finished the game with 8 points and seems to be the best player on the field to fill a low goal pro spot in your line up.

Players to consider for your lineup: Adolfo Cambiaso, Juan Martin Obregon, Tommy Collingwood, Kian Hall

Wild Cards: Mariano Gracida, Agustin Nero
